I’ve never understood why explaining the benefits of drinking water should be so complicated.
The stuff is pure and from what I understand, the magical ingredient that holds the body together.
It does so many great things.
But first, a quick story…
Not all line ups at the airport are the same and I’m living proof of it. They pulled me out once.
I wasn’t sure what they wanted to talk to me about but I couldn’t imagine it was anything that serious.
They informed me that I wasn’t allowed to get on the plane with my bottle of water because it was a bottle of water. It was a full liter and clearly not opened yet.
I got singled out because some crazy people somewhere developed some kind of liquid explosive and now everybody everywhere would not be able to bring water on board a plane.
I quickly demonstrated that it was just water and drank some of it. It didn’t matter. I still had to get rid of it or drink it all.
The logic was baffling but what can you do? It was a safety measure and I understood. So I drank some of it and gave them the rest.
As I waited in line I could see one of them empty the remainder of it into a potted fern set off to the side. This was even more confusing since I’m pretty sure the plant was plastic.
The morale of the story is the world has two kinds of water. The kind you get on planes and the kind you get everywhere else. I know, you wish you thought of that. Just don’t think about it before bed or on an empty stomach. You’ll never get any sleep.
Water Is Great For You
In any event, water is great for you. Your body has tons of water and keeping hydrated keeps your body working smoothly.
Whether you enjoy drinking water in the morning, after lunch or to compliment a snack later in the day, it’s pretty much always a good idea. Try it with lemon.
Here are some of my favorite benefits of drinking water, all of which will assist you on your journey to make a better body.
1. Drinking Water Can Help Keep You Regular
It doesn’t matter how much praise is heaped upon the various benefits of drinking water, none of them hold a candle in my opinion to keeping you regular.
Constipation sucks. I don’t think I’d get much opposition to that statement.
Increasing your water intake helps deal with the stopped up problems .
Not drinking enough water seems to be a risk factor in developing constipation.
Water keeps your intestines sleek and flexible and helps keep the foods you eat moving along inside there so you will stay happy and sing songs praising your intestines.
If you don’t have enough water, it causes dehydration. This results in your body pulling water from your colon which can result in constipation.
Stay aware of when your body is getting rid of water, often in hot weather and during exercise, drink accordingly and you should be good to go (so to speak).
For me this is the number one benefit of drinking water. Nobody likes to suffer with clogged plumbing.
2. Drinking Water Is Great For Weight Control
This is a great one for people looking to get into shape and lose that belly fat. By drinking water, your stomach will feel more full and aid in suppressing your appetite. Hence, making it good for weight control.
Drinking water also helps with boosting metabolism. Studies show that by drinking water you can boost your metabolism by up to 30% for over an hour.
A great trick apparently is drinking water approximately half an hour before you eat. It will also help you to feel more full and result in the consumption of fewer calories.
Water may also temporarily encourage the body to burn more calories while resting after drinking. It may also expend additional energy, and burn more calories, heating cold water to aid with digestion.
As noted above, water will help with the removal of waste in the body. It allows both the colon and kidneys to function efficiently in this regard. When dehydrated the body is more likely to retain waste and take on bloat which can add inches to your waste as well as pounds to the scale.
Also, as it turns out, the body can’t properly metabolize stored fat or carbohydrates without water. So you have to drink enough water to burn off fat from the things you eat along with stored fat.
It also happens to be great for exercise, keeping all your parts working smoothly. As well as being great for helping prevent cramps and fatigue brought on by physical exertion. You can’t lose having water before, during and after your workout.
So if you’re concerned about weight control and thinking about how to fill your empty stomach, reach for a glass of water.
3. Helps Prevent Hangovers, Unwanted Headaches And Other Body Pains
Anybody who designated a part of their lives to partying and late nights probably knows about this one. I don’t know anybody personally who would do such a thing.
The trick I learned early on was to keep drinking water on nights that I was enjoying some booze.
Drinking alcohol is believed by some to cause your body to loose more liquid than you are taking in and this can lead to dehydration.
However, there have been some recent studies, particularly one by molecular biologist Patrick Schmitt, that demonstrate the old beliefs about drinking booze and water together to offset a hangover are not accurate.
In fact drinking booze does not even necessarily dehydrate the body. The real trick apparently is to simply drink more water and little booze. Check out the article. Some interesting stuff in there. You can decide for yourself. Maybe you’ve even conducted your own studies.
But dehydration on its own is still a problem nicely offset by drinking water.
The symptoms of dehydration are well known to those experiencing it. They include things like dry mouth, fatigue and of course, headaches.
You can avoid dehydration and all the unpleasant complications that come along with it, just by drinking plenty of water.
It also happens to be good for helping prevent other physical aches and pains.
Drinking plenty of water may also help to prevent or minimize joint pain. Since your joints are made up of cartilage which is predominantly made up of fluid, it is to your benefit to keep that cartilage running smooth. You can do this by drinking water.
Staying hydrated when you experience joint injury is important for helping to deal with discomfort while your joints are working to heal.
Additionally, you can help prevent muscle cramping by drinking lots of water. Dehydration can lead to the sudden tightening of muscles, a particular inconvenience while exercising or anytime for that matter, and can can be avoided by a steady diet of H2O.
So keep your body feeling good and stay hydrated.
4. Drinking Water Boosts Energy and Brain Function
This is another great reason to incorporate drinking lots of water into your exercise routine.
Besides keeping you hydrated, it boosts your energy levels. When your energy is boosted, obviously you’re more motivated to push yourself when exercising to get to that next level.
Staying hydrated is crucial for anybody engaging in a regular exercise regimen. Especially when you are experiencing weight loss. Lots of it can be water and you want to feed your brain with water after these sessions.
Staying hydrated helps maintain focus and improve concentration. Studies have shown that even a little dehydration can affect the way your brain functions.
Once dehydration begins to set in, your short term memory can be affected as well as your recall with long term memory. You may have difficulty calculating whether it’s a good idea to stop off for something to eat if you still want to make it in time for a movie.
All of these mental calisthenics are affected by how hydrated you are. It might even make you smarter. Let’s face it, everybody can use good brains.
5. Drinking Water Helps Your Body Regulate Temperature
This is a cool one. (Ugh. Terrible joke and completely unintended. But I’m keeping it.)
Ever wonder why you feel too hot or cold while other people around you aren’t bothered by the temperature?
Well, the human body uses water to stabilize temperature because it absorbs and transfers heat so well.
This means the water in your body, like in your skin, can act as a screen against sudden temperature changes.
As you probably know, your blood is made up mostly of water. When needed, it will transfer heat towards your internal organs or away and up to the surface of skin for cooling. It comes out as sweat or vapor depending on what the body is looking to do.
You’ve got to admit, that’s one of the more um, neat benefits of drinking water. And it continues to operate this way, morning, night, stressing or resting. That’s an unfortunate rhyme.
In any event, you want to stay hydrated so your internal thermostat keeps running like a clock or thermostat. Which ever analogy you prefer. This is particularly important to keep your body running smoothly, particularly while exercising.
6. Prevent Bad Breath
This one I’m including because it’s really good news and it’s so obvious I think it’s probably overlooked.
I’m sure you’ve been in that situation when somebody around you is suffering from dragon’s breath.
Want a quick and easy way to deal with it?
Offer them a glass of water. If they don’t take it you can always make new friends.
People always reach for gum or mints, a good choice for dealing with the situation but if they’re not available, a cool glass of water should do the trick.
Bad breath is often caused by bacteria or food particles in the mouth not getting washed away so a splash from a tall glass of water will do the trick.
If you feel dry mouth coming on, it’s always a good time to grab some water and you won’t have to deal with these kinds of consequences.
This way you can stay hydrated and keep your friends. Trust me, they’ll thank you.
For me, these are some of the more outstanding benefits of drinking water. There are lots of other great things that come from it. Your mood is lighter, you sleep better, it’s good for skin, for hair… it goes well with lemon even first thing in the morning… the list is endless.
The next time you’re breaking out your warm up routine, hitting the hard court or just going for a walk, enjoy the benefits of drinking water. It’s a great companion for all kinds of activity and will make you feel good in the long run.
Yes! I had horrible charlie horses, often in the middle of the night, when I was younger. Turned out the cause was dehydration; when I upped my water intake they went away–permanently. Been a water fan ever since!
Those charlie horses can be a real pain (ugh terrible pun). Thanks so much for the feedback Mitch. Drop by anytime.
Water is truly an amazing substance. Thanks for sharing all these benefits – a couple of them I was unaware of.
